Commercial, Using your FireBoard
Use Cases of the New FireBoard Beacon
Before the launch of our new FireBoard Beacon, we decided to explore a variety of use cases for our new long-range wireless temp and humidity sensor. With a functioning product in hand, we approached a diverse group of businesses that would benefit from the technology. In addition to these commercial applications, we began an internal group of FireBoard employees linked with a Slack channel where we would share our home uses of Beacon and workshopped the firmware.
Grocery Store, Buckner Thriftway

Located in Buckner, MO, Buckner Thriftway has been using our corded cold storage probes. Adding Beacons to their monitoring system has allowed us to cross-compare our S1G system with the pre-existing wired probes.
Large Scale Cold Storage, Fortune Fish & Gourmet

Fortune Fish & Gourmet is a 30,000 sq ft processing and distribution facility for this restaurant wholesaler.

Butcher Shop, Local Pig

Located a few blocks away from FireBoard Headquarters, Local Pig is a whole animal meat market specializing in locally raised and harvested items. With large amounts of their inventory kept in coolers, monitoring the temperature levels is key to managing their quality control.

Local Pig is located in Kansas City’s historic City Market, whose robust architecture features 12″ thick concrete walls and floors. The S1G network uses a low-frequency radio signal, that was chosen with buildings like these in mind. We placed Beacons in their two walk-in coolers in the basement along with 4 additional units in display cases.
Restaurant, The Russell

The Russell is a restaurant and catering company serving lunch and dinner items cooked on a live-fire grill. We placed Beacons in their freezer, and numerous coolers specializing in fresh produce, cheese, meat, prepared items, and beverages.
FireBoard Employee Testing
A small group of our designers and engineers were issued advanced production models to experiment with at home. Some of these early models had red cases. What resulted were some use cases outside of our intended commercial cold storage use. Possibly one of the most likely would be the consumer with their own chest freezer.

The FireBoard test Beacon seen at left is a preproduction red unit and is placed in a deep freeze alongside frozen food items. The Beacon on the right is seen in the finalized black color, measuring the room temperature and, the chest freezer it is attached to with the addition of an external probe. Both provide the user with an active graph of temperature and humidity history via the same FireBoard App used to manage the FireBoard 2 and Spark.

The FireBoard Beacon is a versatile thermometer with countless uses. Our in-house user group found it useful in tracking the ground temp of a compost pile, comparing the output of HVAC resisters, and monitoring the water temp of a 125-gallon aquarium. We can’t wait to see how our customers will use their Beacon!
